Of Course They Are

President Obama and his Democratic allies are seizing on the exodus of private insurers from ObamaCare markets to renew their push for a so-called “public option[.]”

Never mind that the revival of this push is a direct result of the broad, expensive failure that is those same Know Betters’ Obamacare.  No, when government fails as miserably as it has done with Obamacare, the only right answer is the Progressive answer: more government.  A bigger hammer.

We can’t have competition and private enterprise do this.  We gotta have Know Betters in Government do this; us mere citizens can’t be trusted with such weighty matters.

Union Greed

It isn’t enough that unions demand the “right” to raid honest citizens’ pocketbooks for union dues—demanding that non-union members pay up as a condition of being allowed to work.  Unions also are demanding the “right” to raid honest citizens’ pocketbooks for tax money with which to plus up union “pensions.”

See, for instance, the United Mine Workers of America and their pet Democratic Party Senator, Joe Manchin (whom we had thought was more honest than this).

The Miners Protection Act of 2015—sponsored by Senator Joe Manchin (D, WV) and co-sponsored by eight Republicans—would bail out the underfunded pension plan of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA).

This potential for legalizing theft also has the unfortunate support of eight allegedly Republican Senators and the Senate Finance Committee Chairman, Orrin Hatch (R, UT), who most assuredly should know better.

This bill would raid a mine reclamation fund to the tune of $490 million for the sole purpose of feeding the union maw.  Never mind that the unreclaimed mines would remain uncleaned up (which, by the way, Democrats, having successfully defunded mine reclamation, will rend and wail about those same unreclaimed mines for their personal political gain).

Manchin is disingenuously arguing that the Federal government has an obligation to bail out the union and its funds.  It’s a familiar refrain: Government has to do this, Government has to bail that out, because private enterprise—of which the UMWA is one, make no mistake about that—cannot be trusted to see to its own affairs.

Manchin is disingenuous in another way: as Diana Furchtgott-Roth (lately Labor Department Chief Economist and currently a Senior Fellow at the Manhattan Institute) pointed out in her piece at the above link,

UMWA knows how to fund a pension plan.

The UNWA needs no government help in this.

And

Required filings with the Labor Department show that the pension plan for the officers of the UMWA—the president, vice presidents and treasurer—is solvent.

UMWA leadership has been careful to take care of themselves.  It’s on them—not honest American citizens—to take care of their membership, too.  Again, no government involvement is needed or appropriate here.

No, this whole sordid affair is just another Progressive effort to take money from honest Americans and redistribute it to their cronies.

An Immunity Deal

Recall that, of some 13 unsecured devices like Blackberries and iPads that Democratic Party Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton used, along with her unsecured private email server, to conduct official and classified official State Department business, none of those 13 devices can be found.  Not a single one of them.  Two of those cell phones were “destroyed” with a hammer or by being broken into two pieces.

In addition to those…disappearances…a computer specialist employed by Platte River Networks, which was itself employed by Clinton to manage her email network, deleted emails that all the players involved, from Clinton and her immediate staff—Huma Abedin and Cheryl Mills—on down through Platte River to and including the computer specialist, knew were under Congressional subpoena and order to preserve.  Now this:

The Department of Justice reportedly gave immunity to a computer expert who deleted Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s emails during its investigation into her private email server despite being ordered by Congress to keep them.

Understand that granting immunity, even by the Obama/Lynch DoJ, isn’t by itself a bad thing: immunity often is granted to an individual who might otherwise come under criminal investigation himself in order to get the immunized person to talk freely in the capacity of a witness to larger wrong-doing.  I’ll come back to this point.

The New York Times has identified the immunized person of interest here as Paul Combetta.  The NYT went on to say

Republicans have called for the department to investigate the deletions, but the immunity deal with the specialist, Paul Combetta, makes it unlikely that the request will go far.

The NYT, sadly, is probably right, but for reasons wholly unrelated to immunity.  Such immunity also is occasionally granted in order to be able to compel the immunized person to answer investigator questions.  Voluntarily, or involuntarily, Combetta certainly can answer investigator questions, even can give testimony at open trial.  The immunization only protects him from prosecution based on what he says; it does not seal his lips.

That the FBI has at least many of those emails that had been deleted (unsuccessfully, as is beginning to be apparent) is clear from many of the FBI’s lately releases.  That the FBI is as aware of the Congressional order as everyone else involved also is obvious.

Comey’s decision to not proceed on his own initiative is a whitewash.  It’s every law enforcement officer’s duty to investigate criminal activity when he sees it; he doesn’t have to await a complaint from outside the agency to start, as Comey ludicrously told Senator Jason Chaffetz (R, UT).

But this is part and parcel of the Obama/Lynch DoJ’s and the Comey FBI’s whitewash of the whole Clinton email security failure.  In the one case, they’re protecting one of their own, and in the other case, he’s protecting one of their own.

And so the NYT likely is right.

Comey’s crocodile tears in his internal, ‘twarn’t me” memo to his agents notwithstanding.

A Pseudo-Apology

Recall that Democratic Party Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said that half of Trump supporters are

…you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the “basket of deplorables”. Right?  …  The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic—you name it.

Now she’s claiming to apologize for her bigoted slur.

Clinton…said: “I regret saying ‘half’—that was wrong. But let’s be clear, what’s really ‘deplorable’ is that Donald Trump hired a major advocate for the so-called ‘alt-right’ movement to run his campaign and that David Duke and other white supremacists see him as a champion of their values.”

Look closely at that statement.  Clinton said she regrets—not apologizes for—the number of folks whom she’s accused of being racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic—you name it.  There’s not a syllable of apology for her actual slur.

Consider, too, that while she’s decrying David Duke’s approval of Trump, an approval Trump has repudiated, Clinton is endorsed by the KKK’s Grand Dragon, Will Quigg, and she’s accepted, with her silence on the matter, that endorsement.

Masquerading that statement as an apology is a lie.

Also keep in mind that her running mate, Senator Tim Kaine (D, VA) says her “apology” is unwarranted, she was right the first time.

With this pair saying that anyone not on their bandwagon is a bigot of one sort or another (to say nothing about lying about “apologizing” and saying even the false apology was unnecessary), what can we expect from them were they to be elected this fall?

Still Holding Hostages

I wrote about this a bit ago.  Unfortunately, the Democrats in Congress still are at it.  The Senate once again failed to pass a bill funding a response to the Zika virus in Florida and elsewhere in the US, because Senate Democrats blocked it—the bill blocks funding for Planned Parenthood.

Yup.

Shamefully, Senate Democrats still are holding the lives of Americans hostage against their getting their way on an entirely separate issue.

Congress should stick the currently proposed Zika funding into the upcoming budget bill, and then pass that budget through reconciliation.  Force President Barack Obama (D) to sign it or to veto Zika treatment funding—and to veto funding the Federal government.
