A Cost of Obamacare

Anecdotal, certainly, but anecdotes are data, and they can accumulate into trends.  This one comes from Fox News‘ “Kelly File.”

One late-middle-aged family with two college-age children were paying $500/mo for a health insurance plan that suited their needs.  President Barack Obama’s Obamacare, though, termed that plan inadequate and so illegal: the family got one of those ubiquitous cancelation letters.  The new health “insurance” plan they got runs them $1,250/mo.

With that explosion in their pocketbook, this family did what any American family does and what the Obama administration refuses to do seriously: they budgeted.

“That’s actually a little bit more than my monthly mortgage on my home, so you can imagine that you have to start thinking about, you know, where is the extra money coming to pay for the policy,” the mother said.

They made a list of things that had to go in order to afford the new plan: charitable donations, extra mortgage payments, “splurges” such as more frequent haircuts, and so on.

Courtesy of Obama and his Obamacare, charity is hurt—that should be a government welfare program, anyway, eh?—accelerated debt pay down is hurt (isn’t that how we got into this mess, excessive debt?), less money to spend on the private economy, ….

The mother added, with considerably more economics acumen than Obama,

…maybe not eating out as much, not going to the movies, that directly affects small business in our community[.]

There Are Worse Names to be Called

Recall the Bowie State University Obamacare kerfuffle [emphasis in the original].

Bowie State University has suspended offering health insurance for domestic students for the 2013-2014 academic year.  Due to new requirements of the Affordable Care Act which will go into effect on January 1, 2014, the cost of insurance for domestic students will increase to approximately $1800 per year [from $54/semester].  If you were covered by the university health insurance last Spring 2013, your policy will expire on August 29, 2013.

Earlier this month, BSU student Eugene Craig objected via the BSU newspaper, The Bulldog Collegian; his article had this closer:

Dr [Rita, BSU Wellness Center Director] Wutoh made the announcement that the university would not be providing coverage for students this academic year, and that they could obtain insurance through the Maryland Health Insurance exchange.  I guess if you like your coverage you really can’t keep it as millions of Americans have been finding out over the last month.  As the plan the University has provided for many semester is considered to be out of compliance with the rules that HHS released for Colleges and Universities the University is forced to send everyone to the Maryland Exchange.  This is one sure way to make sure those “Invincible Millennials” are on the exchanges to make sure the cost of the ACA is balanced out.

Craig since has been roundly criticized, including by school administrators and via his Facebook page.  There, alumni (!) are calling him the “wanna be grandson of Clarence Thomas.”

Worse names, indeed.

Another Implication

…of Obamacare.

Unlike drug addicts, alcoholics, or the obese—all of whom represent higher-than-average medical costs—smokers are the only such group with a pre-existing condition that ObamaCare penalizes. It allows insurance companies to charge smokers up to 50 percent more than non-smokers for an identical policy….

There are a couple of things about this.  One is singling out a particular group for special treatment.  This is what the Obama administration does routinely, though.  Equality under law simply is inconceivable to President Barack Obama and his cronies.

The other is that “[Obamacare] allows insurance companies to charge” bit.  Big Government knows best.  Heaven forfend that a market solution, with individual Americans making our own decisions in an environment where businesses compete for customers without government interference, should be allowed.  Likely at lower cost to us, to boot.

And this double whammy especially hurts the poor, whom Obama studiously ignores in his drive to…deal with…the middle class.  The same high premiums hammer these poor—their low incomes are a major part of why they’re in that “47 million” who don’t have insurance, in the first place—but the subsidies for which they’re eligible cannot be used on the smoker surcharge, which is the mechanism by which the insurer is permitted to plus up the basic premium.

For instance, 64-yr-old non-smoker can get a Silver health “insurance” plan for $9,000 (!) per year.  A 64-yr-old non-smoker will pay $13,600 for the same plan.  Both non-smoker and smoker of an income level can get a subsidy for the $9,000 basic premium, but the smoker is on his own for those additional $4,600.

Happy Thanksgiving

I first posted this in 2011.  I think it bears repeating today.

Today I thought I’d share some thoughts on the matter offered by other folks who are a bit more articulate than I.  In the meantime, be thankful for who we are and where we are: whatever straits we in which we find ourselves, we’re orders of magnitude better off than most everyone else in the world.

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be — That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks — for his kind care and protection of the People of this country previous to their becoming a Nation — for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his providence, which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war — for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed — for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted, for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.
-George Washington, 3 October 1789

The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added which are of so extraordinary a nature that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever-watchful providence of Almighty God. … No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.
-Abraham Lincoln, 3 October 1863

We are profoundly grateful for the blessings bestowed upon us: the preservation of our freedom, so dearly bought and so highly prized; our opportunities for human welfare and happiness, so limitless in their scope; our material prosperity, so far surpassing that of earlier years; and our private spiritual blessings, so deeply cherished by all. For these we offer fervent thanks to God.
-Harry S Truman, 22 November 1950

Perhaps no custom reveals our character as a Nation so clearly as our celebration of Thanksgiving Day. Rooted deeply in our Judeo-Christian heritage, the practice of offering thanksgiving underscores our unshakable belief in God as the foundation of our Nation and our firm reliance upon Him from Whom all blessings flow.
-Ronald W Reagan, 27 November 1986

This Thanksgiving, as we enjoy the company of family and friends, let us gratefully turn our hearts to God, the loving Source of all Life and Liberty. Let us seek His forgiveness for our shortcomings and transgressions and renew our determination to remain a people worthy of His continued favor and protection. Acknowledging our dependence on the Almighty, obeying His Commandments, and reaching out to help those who do not share fully in this Nation’s bounty is the most heartfelt and meaningful answer we can give to the timeless appeal of the Psalmist: ‘O give thanks to the Lord for He is good: for his steadfast love endures forever.’
-George H W Bush, 14 November 1990

And then enjoy yourselves; have plain, raw fun.  That’s not just allowed, it’s a Good in its own right.

The Failed Nuclear Deal

This is what President Barack Obama and his State Department Secretary, John Kerry, have foisted off on us in an allegedly interim deal with the Iranians concerning the latter’s nuclear weapons program:

Iran committed to:

  • halt enrichment above a 5% threshold
  • dismantle the technical connections required to enrich uranium above 5%
  • neutralize its stockpile of near 20% enriched uranium
  • halt progress on its enrichment capacity
  • construction on the plutonium reactor at Arak will “halt”
  • increased transparency and intrusive monitoring

What Iran has in place:

  • 18,000 centrifuges installed
  • more than 10,000 operating
  • some number of tons of low-enriched uranium
  • 440 pounds of higher-enriched uranium (roughly a bomb’s worth) in a form that can be converted relatively quickly to fissile warhead material

The P5+1 (US, Russia, PRC, UK, France, plus Germany) committed to:

  • not impose any new sanctions
  • suspend sanctions on “certain sectors” of Iran’s economy
  • unfreeze $4.2 billion in revenue from oil sales if Iran meets “other conditions.”  These last two easily can run over $7 billion in total

Obama summarized the remaining sanctions this way:

The broader architecture of sanctions will remain in place, and we will continue to enforce them vigorously[.]

Let’s review the bidding here.  Iran has agreed to stop enriching above a purity, and the UN gets to watch.  We’ve seen already the effectiveness of the UN at watching weapons programs.

Iran’s dismantling?  They’ll unplug some plugs, clip some wires, and call it a day.  OK, that’s an exaggeration; Iran has promised, essentially, to shorten its centrifuge cascade at the 5% threshold.  The simplicity of a centrifuge cascade, though, is illustrated in Figures 6 and 7 in a unit of Dr Frank Settle’s description of Nuclear Chemistry, located here.  Settle has this to say, in particular:

Cascades of individual centrifuges constructed to produce LEU [Low enriched uranium] for reactors can be easily reconfigured to produce HEU [Highly enriched uranium] for weapons.

LEU typically is uranium enriched to less than 20%; it’s a simple matter of adjusting the cascade length to stop at 5%.  Keep in mind, now, that Iran agreed to dismantle, not to destroy.  The components will remain in Iran’s possession; the pipings, etc., necessary to regenerate the longer cascades in order to resume weapons grade enrichment will remain an easy matter to reconnect.  And they have 8-ish thousand centrifuges with which to set up additional cascades, with which to accelerate their “5%” uranium production.  But Iran promises….

Iran will retain its tons of existing LEU—and that 5% is the critical base, the hardest stage of enrichment; everything after that is just those cascades repeating a process.  However, Iran promises to neutralize its near-HEU by combining it with Oxygen to make the HEU into an oxide.  This, though, not only is a chemical reaction, relatively simple to reverse, if not entirely cheap (but see what we’re giving the Iranians, below), the oxide is just a standard intermediate step in getting from uranium ore to reactor- or weapons-grade metal.  The HEU will be entirely straightforward to recover.

And the Iranians promise to stop “progress.”  OK….

In return for these…promises…and letting the UN “watch,” we’re giving the Iranian government a ton of money.  Money with which to reverse that neutralization; money with which to reconnect those centrifuge cascades and to generate additional ones; money with which actually to develop the engineering capacity to assemble a deliverable warhead (which, recall, requires no missiles—although Iran now will get a taste of money with which to continue that development—but only a train car or a collection of suitcases separately carried into the target zone); money with which to fund its terror operations, its support of its Syrian and Iraqi operations; etc; etc; etc.

Oh, and Obama will “vigorously enforce” the remaining sanctions, and they’re reversible.  The first is risible: he’s never vigorously enforced; he’s been dragged kicking and screaming to any sanctions at all.

Moreover, any reversal will be strictly an American one, if it happens at all.  Neither the PRC nor Russia will agree to re-ratchet sanctions, and the UK government, like our own, has no stomach for stern measures of any sort on the world stage—a natural outcome of an insistence on moral equivalence.  Germany will simply do what it’s done since 2003: sit on the sidelines and cluck.  France might be willing to act unilaterally, but that’s a small, lone voice in the wilderness.

This is a terrible “deal,” and the Israelis and most Americans are wholly justified in demurring from it.  But we have “peace” in our time.
