A British Exit from the EU

There’s an aspect of so what to the question: what would actually change if the Brits vote to go their own way in a few weeks?  One set of answers involves British influence on the continent or within the EU.

[I]f the British do vote for Brexit and then have to trade with the EU, the UK would in fact find itself isolated with very little influence over regulatory standards in the single market.

Great Britain already has very little influence over those regulatory standards: look, for instance, at the hue and cry from the rest of the EU over how the British comport themselves, and regulate others, in London’s financial markets.  Also, from outside, the British would be utterly free to set their own market regulatory standards without interference or “help” from their Continental betters.

It’s the same with welfare programs and immigration generally.  Although the British do fare quite a bit better here—as part of British Prime Minister David Cameron’s pre-British exit (Prexit?) negotiations with the EU, he won concessions (not enough, some would say) regarding the amount of British welfare payments would be paid to migrant (not immigrant) workers and their stay-at-home (country) families.  But the French already are up in arms over English impertinence at not letting immigrant/refugees to flow across the channel quickly enough to suit France.

Neither of those problems would be any worse with a British exit, and the British would be in absolute control over them were they to go their own way.

The upshot looks as though there is, indeed, a what to the so what—and it favors a British exit from the EU.  Which, in addition to giving Great Britain a great deal more flexibility and complete national sovereignty, would restore the British to their historical role of power broker among hegemon wannabes on the continent.

That last isn’t all bad for the British or for the continent.

Establishment vs Anti-Establishment

Let’s review the bidding.  The Republican Party has been upended in the present Presidential election cycle.  Establishment candidates like Jeb Bush, Rick Santorum, and Mike Huckabee and established Tea Party and Tea Party-ish candidates like Marco Rubio, Carly Fiorina, and Ted Cruz all have been defeated by an avowedly anti-establishment candidate, the all but formally nominated Donald Trump.  Even the Party’s libertarian candidate was roundly defeated across the primaries.

The Democratic Party has been nearly as roundly upended, even though it only had the diversity to put up just two candidates.  Socialist candidate Bernie Sanders, running in the Democratic primaries on anti-establishment imperatives just as avowedly as Trump…is still running, even though he has a very narrow path to the Democrats’ nomination.  Establishment candidate Hillary Clinton has been dragged far to the left, as has the entire Democratic Party, away from their establishment roots by Sanders’ effectiveness, durability, and his farther left positions.

Over the weekend, the Libertarian Party selected their President and Vice President candidates, Gary Johnson and William Weld, respectively—two established governors.

The two establishment parties are putting up, or are about to put up, anti-establishment candidates, and the party on the outside looking in while claiming to be fundamentally anti-establishment, has decided to run an establishment ticket.

Some have suggested that this campaign season is operating under different rules.  It sure is.

Memorial Day Celebrations

I first posted this in 2012.  It bears repeating.

Enjoy this holiday.  Take the time to kick back, relax from the hard work you’ve been doing, and just goof off for a bit.

While you’re doing that, though, do something else, also.  Invite that veteran in your neighborhood, who came back from his service wounded or maimed, and his or her family, to your celebration.  Invite the family in your neighborhood whose veteran was killed in his or her service to your celebration.  They need the break and the relaxation and the support, also.  And they’ve earned your respect and remembrance.MtSoledadMemorialImage_big

To which I add this, excerpted from Alex Horton’s remarks on the significance of the day to him and his:

I hope civilians find more solace in Memorial Day than I do.  Many seem to forget why it exists in the first place, and spend the time looking for good sales or drinking beers on the back porch.  It’s a long weekend, not a period of personal reflection.  At the same time, many incorrectly thank Vets or active duty folks for their service.  While appreciated, it’s misdirected.  That’s what Veterans Day is for.  Instead, they should take some time and remember the spirit of the country and the dedication of those men and women who chose to pick up arms.  They never came home to be thanked, and only their memory remains.

Russia Threatens

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday warned Romania and Poland they could find themselves in the sights of Russian rockets because they are hosting elements of a US missile shield that Moscow considers a threat to its security.

Never mind that this is a blatantly bogus beef and a naked threat.  The defensive missile shield cannot, by its very nature, be a threat to any naiotn other than one that’s planning an offensive attack.  Sort of like Russia already has done to Georgia and Ukraine at gunpoint, and to the Baltic States—each of the three—with cyber attacks.

Putin is beginning to act on his threats, too, thereby confirming the need for a missile shield.

Russia conducted a successful flight test of a developmental anti-satellite missile on Wednesday that is capable of destroying satellites in orbit, American defense officials said.

And

The launch marks another major milestone for Moscow’s efforts to develop weapons capable of destroying US navigation, communications, and intelligence satellites, a key strategic advantage.

This was a direct ascent missile firing, too.  A direct ascent shot means the missile did not have to orbit and then close with the target satellite; it could go from launch straight to satellite attack and impact.  This sort of attack takes hours off the launch to destruct time.

But, of course, this represents no threat to us.  Mm, mm.

What Hath Obamacare Wrought

The Wall Street Journal provided an amazing graphic in its Wednesday edition.ObamacarePremiumIncreasesEven accounting for bad estimating by the health coverage plan companies, this is a clear illustration of the depth of President Barack Obama’s (D) lie when he said insurance costs would go down by roughly $2,500 per year.

It’s also going to get worse: a number of programs intended to buffer these providers against such increase needs expire in 2017, including “risk corridors,” which then will be funded solely by health coverage providers’ own wealth redistribution “premiums” paid into the program by profit-making providers for the sake of money-losing providers.
