Under the smoke screen of the upcoming national debt ceiling…discussions…President Barack Obama had this about negotiating with the Russians Iranians Republicans:

We will not negotiate over whether or not America should keep its word and meet its obligations.

You mean like red lines (Syria)? Or, support for our allies (Israel and forced concessions; Poland and the Czech Republic and missile defense systems)? Support for freedom lovers (Syria, Libya, Iran’s Green Revolutionaries)? Support for foreign nationals who’ve sacrificed on our behalf (Dr Shakil Afridi, Janis Shinwary)?

For days before the UN conclave, White House aides had broadcast the President’s desire to shake Mr Rouhani’s hand. By Monday, the press was overflowing with leaked accounts of where and how it would happen. Having thus turned down the lights and turned up the mood music, it made the snub that followed especially potent.

It would be amateur hour, if it weren’t so utterly incompetent.
