Syrian “Cessation”

Diplomats attempting to negotiate an end to Syria’s bloody civil war said Thursday that they had agreed to try and implement a temporary “cessation of hostilities” in a week’s time as Russia’s prime minister warned that the use of foreign ground troops in the conflict could result in world war.

Those “diplomats” include Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the guy who sits in the US State Department’s chair John Kerry, and an unidentified UN person.

Never mind that the Daesh and al Nusra don’t agree, or that Russia won’t stop its bombing campaign.

Don’t worry, either, about that Russian threat of world war should anyone come in on the ground and thwart Russian ambitions in Syria.

Only Kerry could think this is a good idea. And, of course, Lavrov.

An Appropriate Response

Freedom from Religion Foundation cried foul after the group noticed a “God Bless America” banner that employees at a post office in Pittsburg, KS, had erected after Sep 11, 2001. A lawsuit filed by FFRF on behalf of a Pittsburg resident forced the banner down in late January[.]

This is the timidity of the local postmaster, or perhaps it’s the political correctness of his bosses up the government food chain.

However.

When news of the banner’s banishment spread, a business in the area, Jake’s Fireworks, printed 1,200 “God Bless America” yard signs and 300 banners. Jake’s gave away all of the signs within 45 minutes, according to the Post.

This is entirely appropriate.

Veterans Administration Strikes Again

Now we have a decorated WWII veteran, a Purple Heart winner from injuries he suffered while in a Philippines foxhole, the attack on which killed two of his fellow soldiers and wounded a third badly enough to require a leg to be amputated. He was patched up and returned to duty; over the course of his tour, he earned two Bronze Stars.

This man has never asked for any help from the Veterans Administration until now: he and his wife are in their 90s, they’re living in an assisted living facility, they’ve sold most of their possessions to pay for the facility, and they need his VA benefits.

No dice. Despite having

his discharge papers, a roster of those injured in the attack, and the X-ray taken of his leg after he returned home [and that Purple Heart and those Bronze Stars]

The VA is claiming it has no record of his having served. Discharge papers. That x-ray (taken at a VA hospital shortly after his discharge, pursuant to having some remaining shrapnel from that attack removed). No, these official records aren’t good enough for the VA.

The VA wants affidavits from his fellow soldiers, most of whom at this late date are dead; and proof of treatment from the hospital where he was treated in the Philippines, a field medic station that existed, as such facilities do, on a strictly ad hoc basis.

The VA is still refusing him and his wife his benefits.

I’m Not Either Establishment

In last Thursday’s Democratic Party Presidential Primary debate in New Hampshire, Senator Bernie Sanders (D, VT) said Hillary Clinton was the Party’s Establishment candidate. Her response?

She rebutted Sanders’ “establishment” charge by questioning whether someone running to be the first female president can carry that label.

Leaving aside the fact that two other women—one from each party—have already run for the White House, albeit for second chair, this defense, Clinton’s infamous gender card, says much about her character and of Democrats’ view of gender politics generally.

The candidates who are running for President in this year, in 2008 when Governor Sarah Palin (R, AK) was her party’s Vice President nominee, in 1984 when Representative Geraldine Ferraro (D, NY) was her party’s Vice President nominee and in every Presidential contest in between are Americans who happen to be men or women. Full stop.

Hillary Clinton is the only candidate in 32 years who considers herself a woman first, and an American only secondarily. In fairness to her, though, this comes in the environment of the Left’s last seven years of identify politics, of #BlackLivesMatter but others don’t, of the cop acted stupidly, and on and on.

Haven’t we had enough of Democrats’ identity politics sewage? Think about this, folks, as you go to the New Hampshire polls today, whether to vote in the Democratic Party Primary or the Republican Party Primary.

In Thursday night’s Democratic Presidential Primary debate in New Hampshire, Democratic Party Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was asked about her emails on her private email server.

Clinton pointed Thursday to emerging reports that former Secretary of State Colin Powell and the immediate staff of former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice also received classified national security information on their personal email accounts. The details were included in a memo written by the State Department watchdog that was released Thursday.

Because of course. Someone else did it, too, and that makes Clinton’s mishandling of classified information all right. The rightness or wrongness of a behavior is not at all inherent in the act; rightness—morality, integrity, ethics—comes entirely from whether it was done before or someone else is also doing it now.

This is typical of the Left’s view of morality. We don’t need another of these in the White House.
