Establishment vs Anti-Establishment

Let’s review the bidding.  The Republican Party has been upended in the present Presidential election cycle.  Establishment candidates like Jeb Bush, Rick Santorum, and Mike Huckabee and established Tea Party and Tea Party-ish candidates like Marco Rubio, Carly Fiorina, and Ted Cruz all have been defeated by an avowedly anti-establishment candidate, the all but formally nominated Donald Trump.  Even the Party’s libertarian candidate was roundly defeated across the primaries.

The Democratic Party has been nearly as roundly upended, even though it only had the diversity to put up just two candidates.  Socialist candidate Bernie Sanders, running in the Democratic primaries on anti-establishment imperatives just as avowedly as Trump…is still running, even though he has a very narrow path to the Democrats’ nomination.  Establishment candidate Hillary Clinton has been dragged far to the left, as has the entire Democratic Party, away from their establishment roots by Sanders’ effectiveness, durability, and his farther left positions.

Over the weekend, the Libertarian Party selected their President and Vice President candidates, Gary Johnson and William Weld, respectively—two established governors.

The two establishment parties are putting up, or are about to put up, anti-establishment candidates, and the party on the outside looking in while claiming to be fundamentally anti-establishment, has decided to run an establishment ticket.

Some have suggested that this campaign season is operating under different rules.  It sure is.

What Hath Obamacare Wrought

The Wall Street Journal provided an amazing graphic in its Wednesday edition.ObamacarePremiumIncreasesEven accounting for bad estimating by the health coverage plan companies, this is a clear illustration of the depth of President Barack Obama’s (D) lie when he said insurance costs would go down by roughly $2,500 per year.

It’s also going to get worse: a number of programs intended to buffer these providers against such increase needs expire in 2017, including “risk corridors,” which then will be funded solely by health coverage providers’ own wealth redistribution “premiums” paid into the program by profit-making providers for the sake of money-losing providers.

Voting Rights

A federal judge on Tuesday ordered Ohio officials to reinstate a week of same-day registration and early voting before an election, finding a 2014 state law eliminating the practice violated the Constitution by depressing African-American voting.

Judge Michael Watson said this in his ruling:

They have greater time and resource limitations that may prevent them from waiting in line on Election Day and are less likely to vote absentee.

Never mind that there are no impediments to voting absentee.  Not economic, transportation, time, [or] child-care constraints that increase the cost of voting.

This is a bad ruling.  Not only has he misstated the impediments, he also has applied the wrong solution to his claimed wrong.  The second paragraph of the 14th Amendment prescribes the penalty to be applied to a State that has deprived some of its voting-eligible citizens of their right to vote.  Which, of course this judge knows, since he explicitly cited that paragraph in his ruling.

Judges like this are forcing an end to early voting altogether and requiring voting to go back exclusively to in-person on election day or by absentee ballot.

‘Course, that might not be a bad outcome in its own right.  Absentee ballot voting also is early voting.  And couch potatoes need go no farther than their mailbox to vote.

Hillary Clinton Said, “No”

Hillary Clinton is ducking her final debate with Senator Bernard Sanders, brushing off a commitment she made earlier this year to participate in a forum in California ahead of the state’s June 7 primary….

This raises two questions in my pea brain.  One is, of what is she so afraid?  She’s shown herself an effective debater, and this would have been a golden opportunity to put her opponent away and enhance the strength of her supporters at the Democratic Convention regarding such things as the Party Platform, which Sanders wants to drag even farther to the left.

The other question is a larger one: if Clinton won’t keep this commitment, how can we trust her to keep any commitment were she to be elected?  What is the value of her word, exactly?

Because One Size Fits All

This time it’s the trivium of expiration dates on the food we buy in our grocery stores.

That can of soup in your pantry says “Best by June 2018.” The cereal box on the shelf above it says “Use by October 2016.” The salsa in your fridge says “Sell by June 6, 2016.”  And the quart of milk next to it simply says “May 22, 2016.”

Among the dates found on labels across the US are “production” or “pack” dates of manufacture, “sell by” dates, “best if used by” dates, “use by” dates, “freeze by” dates and even “enjoy by” dates.

And

Two Democrats in Congress—Senator Richard Blumenthal (D, CT) and Congressman Chellie Pingree (D, ME)—are just as confused as you are, and they hope to do something about it before their terms expire.

Wait—what?  Is any rational adult human being really confused about those dates?  Does anyone really not understand these expiration dates?

The States of our Republic set their own rules, but those two Progressive-Democrats don’t want variation across States; they don’t want the citizens of individual States to set their own rules: these worthies of the Federal government Know Better.  And they don’t like our choices.

After all, too many choices, too much variation makes Progressives uncomfortable.

Blumenthal and Pingree are expected to introduce bills in the Senate and House this week to establish a national standard for date labeling that would provide consumers throughout the US with consistent information on when a product begins to lose quality and when it is no longer safe to eat.

Because these two are easily confused, everyone else must be, too.  They’re projecting, again.

Elections have consequences.
